Windorah is one of three towns in the Barcoo Shire in Central West Queensland. It is 314km south-west of Longreach and 1,200km north-west of Brisbane. It is named after the local Aboriginal word for 'big fish'. Windorah was established in the 1880's and is known as "the heart of the channel country". It features a waterhole about 19 kilometres in length and up to 10 metres deep. This relates to Cooper Creek, which is formed by the junction of the Thomson and Barcoo Rivers just south of Jundah. The Cooper attracts many winter visitors as it is an excellent fishing spot and ideal for bird watching and water sports.
The town people work predominantly on the surrounding cattle stations, for the Barcoo Shire Council, local business, Qld health, police and education. Some work in the gas industry and 'fly in, fly out'. Each year the town hosts a Gymkhana, Rodeo, Yabby Races, Car Rallies and the Windorah Sports Camp where schools and students from Distance Education come together for a week with sports coaches travelling in from the big smoke.
The school’s students and P&C is an integral part of all these community events. Windorah State School was established in 1888 and celebrated its 125th Anniversary in 2013.
